Protect the Protest - Thawing the Chilling Effect

Shado is a lived-experience led community of artists, activists, organisers, creators and writers united in the fight for social justice and collective liberation.

Across Europe, our right to protest is under attack. We’re witnessing an increasingly carceral response to people enacting their civil right to democratic intervention. We see it in the passing of repressive laws, an increase in procedural obligations, the use of excessive force and the imprisonment of protestors. Governments are also choosing to target specific groups, using ‘safety and civil disobedience’ rhetoric to further their right-wing regimes.

Artists from all over Europe were invited to create illustrations in response to the brief: ‘Protect the Protest.’ These posters represent the winning image and the runners-up. All responses have been collated into an interactive map to show that our rights across the continent are being infringed upon, and therefore our struggles – and ensuing movements for liberation – are interlinked.  Billboards featuring the artworks were displayed across London, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.
