Resonance of Resurgence
"Resonance of Resurgence" is an inventive and collaborative initiative by Kathy Moscou and Julia Rose Sutherland which engages with significant human rights reports. It places critical and creative emphasis on personal narratives, recognizing intersections of language, culture, resilience, and joy. The project is inspired by several key reports, such as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the Peoples Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada with its 94 Calls to Action, the Declaration on human rights of people of African descent and the reports submitted to the Permanent Forum of People of African descent in support of the UN declaration on the promotion, protections and full respect for the human rights of people of African descent and the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report (Mayibuye Archives).
Resonance of Resurgence is a cross-cultural dialog that explores the Black diaspora and Indigenous experience through a critical human rights lens. The project specifically focuses on Indigenous and Black diaspora narratives within major human rights reports. Our collaborative artwork, presented as an immersive installation, will engage with distinct themes, issues, or narratives found in the human rights reports. The "Resonance of Resurgence" project celebrates and revitalizes Indigenous languages, exploring the profound joy in reconnecting with ancestral tongues. The project also celebrates cultural revitalization, inherent in language, as reconciliation and reparation. The project interrogates what is a ‘report’ by embracing multiple forms of truth, including personal and narrative truth, social or 'dialogue' truth, and healing and restorative truth, as recognized by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Reflections on these forms of truth will be integrated into the artistic responses, expanding the conversation beyond forensic truth. The project responds to human rights reports through innovative artistic expressions, contributing to a more enriched and inclusive discourse surrounding these narratives. Utilizing materials gifted from our communities, the creative mediums employed will interrogate silences and gaps and envision possibilities for the future. Utilizing textiles, imagery, text, and audio, the project aims to create an immersive experience that goes beyond traditional methods, reaching a broader audience and fostering meaningful discussions.
